Serisen is a memory foam cervical pillow for the bed: a single piece of memory foam moulded into a wave, inside a white knitted cover that comes off for washing. Cervical pillow is simply the name shops tend to give contour pillows like this one. It is designed for people who sleep on their back or on their side and prefer a shaped pillow that holds its form, instead of a flat, soft fibre one.

What a cervical pillow with a wave profile is

Seen from the side, the pillow traces a wave. Along one edge there is a higher ridge, along the opposite edge a lower one, and between the two a dip where your head rests. The ridge you leave on the shoulder side is the one that sits under your neck, so turning the pillow round is all it takes to change the height.

Neither height is better than the other: it depends on your build, on how you sleep and on how firm your mattress is. The measurements of each ridge are in the specifications table.

A memory foam pillow: how it feels

Memory foam gives little by little under the weight and warmth of your head and, when you get up, takes a few seconds to return to its place. That is why it does not spring back or flatten like a fibre filling, and the wave is still there in the morning.

It has its quirks. In a cold room it feels firmer until it warms up and, when brand new, it may smell slightly of new foam: this is common and fades as the pillow airs.

A cervical pillow for side or back sleeping

On your side, the distance between the mattress and your head is greater, and many people feel more comfortable with the higher ridge next to the shoulder. On your back, the lower one is usually enough. These are starting points, not rules: try both ways round for several nights. If you sleep on your front, a shaped pillow like this will almost certainly feel too high; a thin, flat one suits that way of sleeping better.

White knitted cover with a zip, washable

The cover is a white knitted fabric, stretchy and soft, and it follows the shape of the foam. It opens with a zip, so you can take it off to wash it. You can put one of your own pillowcases over it, although a loose or stretchy pillowcase suits a shaped pillow better.

How to position a cervical pillow

  1. Let it air

Take it out of the packaging and leave it for a few hours in a ventilated room. It will recover its shape and lose the new smell.

  2. Turn it the right way

Place it on the bed with the ridges parallel to the headboard: one faces your shoulders and the other faces the wall.

  3. Rest your head in the dip

Lie down the way you always sleep, with your head in the lower central area and your neck on the ridge nearest to you.

  4. Turn it round and compare

Give it a half turn to try the other ridge, and keep the one you find more comfortable after several nights.

Care and washing

  • Open the zip, take the cover off and wash it as the label says.
  • The foam does not go in the washing machine or the tumble dryer. If it gets marked, wipe it with a barely damp cloth and let it dry in the air.
  • Air it from time to time, away from direct sunlight and radiators.
  • Do not fold it or store it with weight on top.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cervical pillow?

It is the name shops use for contour pillows: those with a shaped surface, one higher side, one lower side and a dip for the head, instead of a flat rectangle. The name describes the shape. Serisen is a sleep comfort item, not a medical device, and it makes no promise of any effect on your neck.

Which side of a cervical pillow do I use for sleeping on my side?

Many side sleepers prefer the higher ridge next to the shoulder, because there is more distance between the mattress and the head. Even so, it depends on how broad your shoulders are and how far your mattress sinks. Try both ways round for several nights in a row and keep the one you find more comfortable.

And a cervical pillow for sleeping on your back?

On your back, your head is closer to the mattress, so the usual starting point is the lower ridge, with your head in the dip. If that feels too low, turn the pillow round and try the higher one. For sleeping on your front it is not a good choice: with either side it sits too high.

How long does it take to get used to a memory foam pillow?

It depends on the person and on the pillow you used before. If you are coming from a soft, flat fibre or feather pillow, at the start it will feel firm and very defined in shape. It is normal to give it several nights before deciding. In winter, in a cold bedroom, it takes a little longer to soften.

Why does the pillow smell new when I open it?

Newly made and packed foam often has a slight smell, which is not a sign of a defect. Take it out of the plastic, remove the cover if you like and leave it in a room with the window open. A few hours, or a day, of airing is usually enough. If it bothers you, wait until it has gone before sleeping on it.

Can a memory foam cervical pillow be washed?

The cover, yes: it is knitted, has a zip and is washed following the label. The foam, no: water soaks into it, it takes a long time to dry and spinning can pull it out of shape. If something is spilt on it, wipe the surface with a barely damp cloth and let it air-dry before putting the cover back on.
