Read the full description
Zavinia is a manual U-shaped toothbrush for children. Instead of a small head with bristles, it has a soft silicone head shaped like a horseshoe that sits over the upper or lower row of teeth, and a rounded handle for small hands to hold. It is designed for families who want to try another way of doing the brushing routine, always with an adult beside the child.
What a U-shaped toothbrush is like
The head is U-shaped, like a small mouthguard, with silicone bristles inside. The child puts it in their mouth, bites gently and moves it from side to side and up and down. That way a whole row of teeth is covered at once; then the brush is turned round for the other row. It is a different movement from a regular toothbrush, and many children are curious to try it.
A silicone toothbrush for children
Both the head and the bristles are made of soft silicone, which bends when bitten and has no hard edges. It is a material that rinses easily and does not hold water between filaments, as nylon bristles do. The exact composition of the material is given in the specifications table.
A handle for small hands
The handle is short, rounded and fairly wide, so the child can grip it with the whole hand and move it without it slipping. It also makes it easy for the adult to hold it together with the child to guide the movement at the beginning.
U-shaped toothbrush: from what age and which size
U-shaped toothbrushes come in sizes by age, because the head has to match the size of the mouth. If it is too big it does not fit comfortably, and if it is too small it does not cover the row of teeth. The recommended age for this model is in the specifications table; if in doubt, ask your dentist or paediatrician.
How to use the U-shaped toothbrush
Prepare the brush
Wet it and put on the head the amount of toothpaste your dentist or pharmacist recommends for the child's age.
Top row
The child places the U over the upper teeth, bites gently and moves the handle from side to side and up and down.
Bottom row
Turn the brush round and repeat with the lower teeth.
Go over it
An adult checks the result and goes over any areas that need it with a regular toothbrush.
Rinse and let it dry
Rinse the head under the tap, shake it and stand it upright in a cup to air-dry.
Cleaning and replacing the brush
- Rinse it well after each use to remove any toothpaste.
- Store it upright and not fully covered, so it dries between uses.
- Each child should use their own brush.
- Check the head before each use and replace it if it is torn, chewed or misshapen, or when the manufacturer advises.
Frequently asked questions
From what age can a U-shaped toothbrush be used?
It depends on the size, because the head has to fit the child's mouth. The recommended age for this model is given in the specifications table. In any case, the child should be able to bite gently and follow instructions, always with an adult beside them. If in doubt, ask your dentist or paediatrician.
Does the U-shaped toothbrush replace a regular toothbrush?
Think of it as a different way of doing the routine, not as a replacement for supervision. It is advisable for an adult always to check the result and go over any areas that need it with a regular toothbrush. To find out which routine suits your child, follow your dentist's advice.
Which toothpaste should be used, and how much?
Use a children's toothpaste in the amount your dentist or pharmacist recommends for the child's age. Spread it over the bristles inside the U so that it reaches the whole row of teeth. Teach the child to spit it out when finished, and keep the tube out of their reach.
How often should a children's silicone toothbrush be replaced?
As with any toothbrush, when the head is misshapen, chewed or torn, or within the period stated by the manufacturer on the packaging. Check it before each use: if you see cracks or loose pieces, stop using it. It is also worth replacing it after the child has had a cold, if you are advised to.
How is it cleaned and stored?
After each use, rinse the head well under the tap until no toothpaste is left, shake it and stand it upright in a cup to air-dry. If it has a cap, put it on once it is fully dry. Do not boil it or put it in the dishwasher unless the manufacturer allows it.
