What it does

A battery-powered automatic pan stirrer: a cylinder with a motor and a button on top, standing on three legs. Switch it on and the legs turn, walking the gadget around the bottom of the pan and moving the sauce, soup, béchamel or custard. It does not watch the heat for you: you still keep an eye on the hob.

Read the full description

Fidala is an automatic pan stirrer: an upright cylinder with a motor and a button on top that stands on three legs. Switch it on and the legs turn, so the gadget walks itself around the bottom of the pan and the sauce keeps moving while you chop, lay the table or see to another pan. It runs on batteries, with no cable. It is made for anyone who often cooks sauces, custards or soups that ask to be stirred for a good while.

Automatic stirrer for pots and saucepans: how it moves

The motor body stays above the liquid and the three legs touch the bottom. As they turn, they push the gadget along slowly, and it changes course when it reaches the side of the pan. That is how it covers the bottom with nobody guiding it. It needs a flat base and a medium-sized pan: in a very small one it has no room to move and in a very wide one it leaves areas untouched.

Automatic kitchen stirrer for sauces, soups and custards

It does well with liquids and light sauces: a tomato sauce, a soup, a béchamel, a custard, porridge or a risotto base while you add the stock. Its job is to keep the contents moving, which is just what these recipes ask for. It does not knead or whisk: in thick doughs or stiff purées the legs cannot make headway.

Battery-powered sauce stirrer, with no cable by the hob

It runs on batteries that you replace when they run out, so there is no cable across the hob and no need for a socket nearby. The button on top switches it on and off; it stays out of the liquid and you can reach it without putting your hand in the pan. The battery type and whether they are included are listed in the specifications table.

Legs that pull off to be washed separately

The legs are the part that touches the food and they pull straight off, with no tools, to be washed separately. The motor body holds the batteries and must not get wet: it is wiped with a cloth. The leg material and the temperature it withstands are in the specifications table.

How to use it

  1. Fit the batteries and the legs

Put the batteries in the motor body and push the three legs on until they sit firmly.

  2. Choose a suitable pan

Use a saucepan or a deep frying pan with a flat base and a medium size, with enough liquid for the legs to move.

  3. Stand it in and switch it on

Stand the stirrer upright in the centre, with the motor above the liquid, and press the button.

  4. Stay close

Let it work its way around the bottom while you prepare the rest, without leaving the kitchen and with an eye on the heat.

  5. Switch it off and take it out

Press the button to stop it, lift it out by the motor body and let the legs cool before touching them.

Cleaning and maintenance

After each use, switch it off, wait for the legs to cool and pull them off. Wash them in warm soapy water before the sauce dries on; the specifications table shows whether they are dishwasher-safe. The motor body must not go into water or under the tap: wipe it with a barely damp cloth and dry it. If you will not use it for a while, take the batteries out.

Frequently asked questions

How does an automatic pan stirrer work?

You stand it inside the pan, with the three legs resting on the bottom and the motor above the liquid, and press the button. The legs turn, push the gadget along and make it change course when it touches the side. As it travels, it keeps the sauce moving.

Which pots and saucepans does the automatic stirrer work in?

In flat-bottomed, medium-sized pans: a saucepan, a shallow casserole or a deep frying pan. In a very small saucepan it has no room to turn and in a very wide pot it leaves areas uncovered. The guide range of diameters is in the specifications table. It does not work on curved bases such as a wok.

Does it stop béchamel or custard from sticking?

It helps, because it keeps the sauce moving, which is the hardest thing to do by hand for a long time. It cannot promise it: that depends on the heat, the pan and how thick the mixture gets. On a gentle heat with a sauce that is still fluid it works well; once it thickens a lot, finish it yourself with a spoon.

What batteries does the sauce stirrer take and how long do they last?

It uses replaceable batteries that go inside the motor body; the type, the quantity and whether they are included are in the specifications table. How long they last depends on the quality of the batteries and how thick the sauce is. If you notice it moving more slowly, change them, and take them out if you store it for a long time.

Is it the same as an automatic sauce whisk?

Not exactly. A whisk beats in air or breaks up lumps with fast-turning wires; this gadget stirs slowly, as you would with a spoon, so the contents do not sit still on the bottom. That makes it useful alongside slow cooking, but it will not whip egg whites or cream, or bring a mayonnaise together.

Can I leave the automatic kitchen stirrer alone on the hob?

No. It frees your hands to chop, wash up or prepare another dish, but inside the kitchen and keeping watch on the heat. The gadget does not lower the temperature or warn you if the sauce reduces or boils. Do not use it for deep frying or with caramel either, which reach very high temperatures.
