Sevoria is an electric corkscrew: a black cylinder that you stand upright on the neck of the bottle and that does the work with a motor. Press one side of the switch and the screw goes into the cork and lifts it; press the other and it lets the cork go. It works without a cord, so you can use it in the kitchen or at the table. It is for anyone who opens wine at home regularly, who never got on with a waiter's corkscrew or who would rather not have to pull.

An automatic corkscrew: press and the cork comes out

There is no twisting and no pulling. With the opener straight on the bottle, hold down the opening side of the switch: the screw goes down, winds into the cork and draws it up into the cylinder until it is clear of the bottle. Then lift the corkscrew away, hold down the opposite side and the cork comes out at the bottom, ready to throw away or keep. Your job is to hold the bottle and keep the opener upright.

A cordless electric wine opener

It carries its power inside, so it does not depend on a socket nearby or leave a cable trailing across the worktop. Keep it with the glasses or in a drawer and bring it to the table when needed. The type of power supply and the number of bottles it opens before it needs recharging or new batteries are in the specifications table. If you notice it turning more slowly, that is the sign that it needs more power.

Foil cutter, vacuum wine stopper and pourer

It comes with accessories for before and after. The foil cutter grips the neck and, with a turn, cuts the capsule at the top to leave the cork in view. The pourer pushes into the mouth of the bottle and helps you serve without the last drop running down the label. The vacuum stopper closes a bottle you have not finished so you can keep it upright until the next day.

Which bottles and corks it is for

It is designed for standard-size wine bottles closed with a natural or agglomerated cork, which covers most of what you find in the shop. It is not for cava or other sparkling wines: that stopper is under pressure and is opened by hand. Nor is it needed for screw caps. And a very old, dry or crumbly cork can break with any screw-type corkscrew, this one included.

How to use an electric corkscrew

  1. Remove the capsule

Place the foil cutter over the neck, squeeze and turn until the capsule is cut, then lift off the top.

  2. Stand it straight

Put the bottle on a firm surface and fit the corkscrew upright over the neck, properly vertical.

  3. Press to open

Hold the bottle with one hand and keep the opening side pressed until the cork is fully out. Let it finish.

  4. Release the cork

Lift the corkscrew away and hold down the opposite side until the cork drops out.

Cleaning and maintenance

The corkscrew has a motor and must not get wet: wipe the outside with a barely damp cloth and dry it. Do not put it in water or in the dishwasher. The foil cutter, the pourer and the stopper are washed by hand with soap and water and left to dry. Store it upright in a dry place, and top up the power when you notice it turning with less energy.

Frequently asked questions

How do you use an electric corkscrew, step by step?

Remove the capsule with the foil cutter, stand the corkscrew straight on the neck of the bottle and hold down the opening side until the cork is fully out. Then lift it away and hold down the opposite side so it releases the cork. Keep hold of the bottle with your other hand throughout.

Is an electric corkscrew suitable for old or dry corks?

It is not the right tool for them. An old, dry or crumbly cork can break with any screw-type corkscrew, manual or electric. If the bottle has been stored for many years, open it slowly and keep a strainer to hand in case pieces fall into the wine. This corkscrew is designed for natural and agglomerated corks in good condition.

Does the electric wine opener work on cava or sparkling wine?

No. The stopper of a sparkling wine is held by a wire cage and is pushed out by the pressure of the gas, so it is opened by hand, holding the stopper and turning the bottle. The screw of a corkscrew must not be used on those bottles. It is not needed for screw-cap wines either.

Is the cordless electric corkscrew rechargeable or battery-operated?

It works without a cord. The type of power supply of the unit you receive, roughly how many bottles it opens before it runs out and the charging time are in the specifications table. If one day you notice the screw turning more slowly or not quite drawing the cork, top up the power before the next bottle.

What is the vacuum wine stopper for?

For closing a bottle you have not finished. It goes in the neck in place of the cork, which often no longer fits well, and keeps the bottle closed so you can store it upright in the fridge or the pantry. It does not turn an opened wine back into a freshly opened one: the sensible thing is to finish it soon.

What do I do if the cork stays on the screw of the automatic corkscrew?

Hold down the release side until the cork moves down and drops out; long corks sometimes need a little longer. Do not pull at it with your fingers or poke a knife into the opening of the device, because the tip of the screw is pointed. If the screw does not turn, check that it has enough power.
