Mavinis is a drawing table with a projector for children: a small white tabletop on four legs, with a curved arm rising from it that ends in an animal's head. Inside the head are an LED light and a lens; a disc of pictures goes in and the light projects one of them onto the tabletop. The child traces the lines they can see with a pen and then colours in what they have traced. It is a craft toy to use on the floor or on top of a table, from the age stated by the manufacturer and with an adult nearby.

How a drawing table with a projector works

Each disc holds several small images, like slides. When the light is switched on, the image in front of the lens is projected downwards, enlarged, onto the tabletop. Turning the lens adjusts the sharpness so the lines look clean. It does not connect to a phone or project your own photos: just the pictures on the discs included.

A projector for tracing pictures step by step

Going over the outline of a projected figure is a calm way to make a complete drawing with a recognisable result. Then, with the projector switched off, the child chooses the colours and the details. You draw on a sheet or on the drawing book resting on the tabletop; it helps to hold the paper down with a little masking tape so it does not move and the figure lines up with what has already been drawn.

A drawing projector for children with interchangeable discs

The discs go into the head of the projector and turn to move from one image to the next. They are usually grouped by theme, such as animals, vehicles or characters, so there is plenty to choose from. To change disc, just take it out and put another in, with no tools. Keep them together in a bag or a box so they do not get scratched, because a mark on the disc is projected too.

A projector table for drawing, with the light off too

With nothing switched on it is still a little drawing table: the tabletop is smooth and white, and the box includes pens, a drawing book and an eraser, so you can start without buying anything else. To keep the drawings, and the tabletop, the practical thing is to draw on paper.

It is a low, small table, meant for a child to draw at sitting on the floor, or to be placed on top of a large table; the measurements are in the specifications table.

How to use it

  1. Put the table together

An adult fits the legs and the projector arm as the manual shows and puts the batteries in, with the cover closed properly.

  2. Prepare the sheet

Place a sheet or the drawing book on the tabletop, under the lens, and tape it down if needed.

  3. Choose the picture

Put a disc into the head of the projector and turn it to the image you want.

  4. Focus and trace

Switch on the light, adjust the sharpness with the lens and trace the lines with the pen.

  5. Switch off and colour in

Switch off the projector and finish the drawing in the colours you like.

Care and maintenance

  • Clean the lens with a soft, dry cloth if the image looks blurred.
  • Hold the discs by the edge and keep them together, where they will not get scratched.
  • Remove the batteries if you will not use the table for weeks.
  • Wipe the tabletop with a barely damp cloth, put the caps back on the pens when you finish and do not leave the table in the sun.

Frequently asked questions

How does a children's drawing table with a projector work?

The head on the arm holds an LED light and a lens, and a disc of small images goes inside. When it is switched on, the image on the disc is projected, enlarged, onto the tabletop, where the sheet is placed. The child traces the lines with a pen, turns the disc to change picture and, with the light off, colours in what they have traced.

Can you project your own photos or drawings?

No. This tracing projector works with the discs it comes with: it has no phone connection, no memory card and no way of loading new images. If the manufacturer sells extra compatible discs in future, this will be shown on the product page.

Is it a table to sit at, or is it used on the floor?

It is a low, small table: the child draws sitting or kneeling on the floor, or with the little table placed on top of a large one. It is not a desk with a chair and it will not take anyone sitting or leaning on it. The size of the tabletop and the height are in the specifications table; compare them with the place where you plan to use it.

What batteries does it take and are they included?

It runs on batteries; the type, number and whether they come in the box are given in the specifications table. The compartment closes so that children cannot easily open it: an adult should always be the one to change the batteries and check that the cover is firmly fastened.

What do I do if the projected image looks blurred?

Turn the lens little by little until the lines look sharp. If it is still blurred, clean the lens and the disc with a soft, dry cloth, and check that the disc is pushed in properly. It helps to dim the room a little, and worn batteries also make the image weaker.

From what age can it be used?

The recommended age is given by the manufacturer on the packaging and in the specifications table. As it contains batteries, small discs and pens with caps, with younger children it is important that an adult is present, helps fit the disc and reminds them not to look straight into the light.
