Damireo is a magnetic window cleaner made of two triangular pieces: one stays inside your home and the other outside, held to the other side of the glass by the pull of the magnets. When you move the inside piece, the outside one follows and cleans the outer face. It works on single-pane glass: glazed terraces, older windows, fixed panes or shower screens. It does not work on double-glazed windows, which are the most common kind in homes today.
Double-sided magnetic window cleaner: both sides at once
Each piece has a pad that wipes the glass and a rubber wiper along the edge that draws the water off. As you slide the inside piece by its handle, both pads work at the same time, one on each face, and the triangular shape helps you reach into the corners.
So there is no need to clean the inside and then work out how to reach the outside: in a single pass you go over the pane on both sides.
How to clean the outside of windows without leaning out
You place the outside piece with the window open and then close it carefully; from then on everything is done from inside. It comes with a safety cord that ties to the inside piece or to your wrist, so that if it comes away from the glass it hangs there instead of dropping into the street or the courtyard.
Magnetic window cleaner for single glazing: where it works and how to measure
The magnet in this model is made for a single sheet of glass. You find one in shower screens, interior glass doors, glazed terrace or balcony enclosures, shop windows and older windows. Double glazing has two sheets with an air gap between them, and at that distance the pieces do not hold.
Before you buy, measure the thickness of your glass and compare it with the range in the specifications. The easiest way is to measure the edge with a ruler wherever it is exposed, such as the edge of a shower screen or a glass door. If the glass is thicker than stated, the pieces come apart; if it is thinner, they grip too hard and are difficult to move.
How to use the magnetic window cleaner
Wet the pads
Dampen both pads in water with a little of your glass cleaner and wring them out well so they do not drip.
Tie the cord
Fasten the safety cord to the outside piece and to your wrist or the inside piece.
Position the pieces
With the window open, put the outside piece on the outside and bring the inside one up from inside until they lock together. Close the window slowly.
Clean in passes
Slide the handle from top to bottom and side to side, with overlapping passes. Finish at the bottom to collect the water.
Remove the pieces
Open the window, take hold of the outside piece before anything else and then separate the inside one.
Care and maintenance
After each use, rinse the pads in water, wring them out and let the two pieces dry apart. Check that no sand or grit is left in them, as it could scratch the glass next time, and replace them when they are worn. Store the pieces well apart or with a piece of thick cardboard between them, so they do not snap together.
Frequently asked questions
Does the magnetic window cleaner work on double glazing?
Not this model. Its magnet is made for single-pane glass, and on double glazing, which most windows in modern homes have, the pieces do not hold. To tell which you have, look at the edge of the glass next to the frame: if you see a metal spacer bar between two sheets of glass, it is double glazing.
Does the magnetic window cleaner work on a shower screen?
Yes, as long as the screen is a single sheet of glass and its thickness is within the range in the specifications. Measure the edge before you buy, because some shower screens use thicker glass than the magnet can handle. Use the cord here too, so the piece cannot drop onto the shower tray.
How do I clean the outside of a window that does not open?
The outside piece has to be placed on the outside, so you need access to that side at least once: from an adjoining pane that does open, from a balcony or from the terrace. Once it is attached, slide it across to the fixed pane and clean it from inside with the inside piece.
What happens if the outside piece comes loose?
If the safety cord is securely tied to your wrist or to the inside piece, it hangs beside the window and you pull it back in calmly by the cord. That is why it should not be used without the cord. If it often comes loose, the glass is probably thicker than the magnet can handle, or it is double glazing.
What liquid should I use with the magnetic window cleaner?
Lukewarm water with a few drops of your usual glass cleaner or washing-up liquid. Wet both pads and wring them out well before fitting them: if they are soaking, water runs down the glass and leaves more marks. If the outer face is very dirty, do two passes and rinse the pads in between.
Can it scratch the glass?
Clean pads do not scratch glass, but if they drag sand, building dust or bits of cement they can mark it. Before you start, rinse off heavy dirt with water if you can reach it, rinse the pads well and do not use it on glass with adhesive film or special coatings without checking with the manufacturer.
