Read the full description

Mavelis is a pack of toilet cistern tablets: solid cleaning tablets that you drop into the water tank of the toilet. There they dissolve slowly and release a cleaning agent, so that each time you flush, the bowl is rinsed with that water. They are a cleaning product that gets used up, not a device, and they are meant for anyone who wants the toilet to hold up better between one clean and the next without adding chores.

Toilet tablets that work from inside the cistern

The tablet does not go in the bowl or hang from the rim: it goes inside the cistern, out of sight. The water around it takes up the cleaner while the tank is at rest and flows into the bowl when you flush. There are no cages to fit and no parts to refill.

As it dissolves little by little, one tablet serves for many flushes. How long it lasts depends on the size of the cistern, the hardness of the water and how many times a day the toilet is used.

They help keep limescale and stains from building up

Over time, hard water leaves a ring of limescale at the waterline and marks where the flush runs down. By rinsing the bowl with cleaning water every time, the tablets help those marks take longer to form between one clean and the next.

They do not do the job of the toilet brush or of your usual bathroom clean: they are a support, so that the bowl reaches cleaning day in better shape. Limescale that is already encrusted needs a descaler and some scrubbing.

Tinted water and a fresh scent with every flush

The tablet tints the flush water. As well as being visible, the colour works as a signal: while the water comes down tinted, there is tablet left; when it runs clear again, it is time to put in another. There is no need to open the cistern to check.

Each flush also leaves a fresh scent in the bowl. It is the scent of a cleaning product: it goes alongside airing the bathroom, it does not take its place.

How to put the tablets in the cistern

  1. Lift the cistern lid

Take it off carefully and rest it on a towel. If your cistern is concealed in the wall, check beforehand whether it has an access opening to the water.

  2. Take out one tablet

With dry hands, take a tablet and close the pack properly. Check on the pack whether it has a wrapper that needs removing.

  3. Drop it into the water

Place it in a corner of the tank, away from the flush mechanism and the water inlet, and put the lid back.

  4. Wait before flushing

Wait for the time stated on the pack before you flush, so that the tablet starts to dissolve.

  5. Replace it when the water runs clear

When the flush stops coming out tinted, put in a new tablet. Wash your hands after handling them.

Storage and upkeep

Keep the tablets in their cardboard pack, properly closed, somewhere dry and cool: the damp of the bathroom can soften them before their time. A high cupboard is better than the edge of the bath. Use one tablet at a time, not several together. Carry on cleaning the toilet with the brush as often as you always have and, every so often, lift the cistern lid to check that the mechanism and the rubber seals are still in good condition.

Frequently asked questions

How do you put the tablets in the toilet cistern?

Lift the cistern lid, drop one tablet into a corner of the tank, away from the flush mechanism, and put the lid back. Wait for the time stated on the pack before you flush. Put in one tablet at a time and wash your hands when you finish.

How long does one cistern tablet last?

It depends on the size of the cistern, the hardness of the water and how many times a day it is flushed, so it varies from one home to another. The approximate duration is given in the specifications on this page. In practice the water tells you: when it stops coming out tinted, the tablet is finished.

Do toilet cleaning tablets replace the toilet brush?

No. They rinse the bowl with cleaning water at every flush and help limescale and stains take longer to build up, but they do not scrub. Carry on cleaning the toilet with the brush and your usual routine; what you will notice is that the bowl reaches cleaning day in better shape.

Can they damage the rubber seals or the cistern mechanism?

Any cleaner that sits in the cistern is in contact with the rubber seals and the valve. That is why it is best to use a single tablet, place it away from the mechanism and check the seals from time to time. If you notice the cistern leaking water into the bowl, take the tablet out and check the mechanism.

Do they work with any cistern and in homes with a septic tank?

They suit cisterns with an accessible tank, with a single or dual flush button. With cisterns concealed in the wall, they work just when you can reach the water through the access behind the flush plate. If your home has a septic tank, check the pack label beforehand: not every cistern cleaner is suitable for them, and the label says whether this one is.

Can they be used in a home with children or pets?

Yes, with the precautions that apply to any cleaning product. Keep the pack closed and high up, out of their reach, and keep the toilet lid down so that animals do not drink the tinted water. If someone puts a tablet in their mouth or gets it in their eyes, follow the instructions on the label.
