Mazano is a travel steam iron: a soleplate iron, like the one at home, reduced to a size that fits in a suitcase. It has a soleplate that heats up, a small water tank for the steam and a handle that folds to take up less space. It is for people who travel for work, for students in halls or shared flats and for quick touch-ups at home without getting out the big iron.

A small steam iron with a real soleplate

Unlike a handheld steamer, this iron rests on the fabric: the heat of the soleplate, the pressure and the steam smooth the garment. That is why it handles what a steamer does not do well, such as pressing a trouser crease, flattening a shirt collar or ironing a cuff.

The soleplate is smaller than that of a household iron, so it slips easily between buttons, around the collar and along the sleeves.

Travel iron with steam or dry ironing

Fill the tank, wait for the soleplate to heat up and press the steam button when you need it. For fabrics that cannot take steam, or for a quick once-over, you can iron dry. The dial adjusts the heat to the fabric: lower for synthetics and higher for cotton or linen.

As the tank is small, you will need to refill it during a long session. Always unplug the iron before doing so.

A portable iron for your suitcase

The handle folds down and the iron becomes compact, easy to tuck between clothes or into a desk drawer. You do not need an ironing board: on a stable table, with a thick folded towel underneath, you have enough surface for a shirt.

Before travelling outside Europe, check the voltage it accepts in the specifications and take the right plug adapter.

How to use the travel iron

  1. Fill the tank

With the iron unplugged and cold, fill the tank with water up to the mark and close the lid.

  2. Prepare the surface

Spread a thick towel over a stable, heat-resistant table and lay the garment on it.

  3. Choose the temperature

Plug the iron in, turn the dial according to the garment label and wait for it to heat up.

  4. Iron with steam

Glide the soleplate over the fabric and press the steam button on the most creased areas.

  5. Unplug and let it cool

When you finish, unplug it, empty any remaining water and let the soleplate cool completely before folding and storing it.

Care and maintenance

Empty the tank after each use so water does not stay inside while you travel. If the water where you live is very hard, mix it with distilled water, provided the manufacturer allows it. Clean the cold soleplate with a damp cloth, without scourers or abrasive products. Store it dry and folded, with the cable gathered without wrapping it tightly around the iron.

Frequently asked questions

Travel iron or garment steamer: which suits me better?

If you want to press collars, cuffs or trouser creases, the travel iron, because it rests a hot soleplate on the fabric. If you mainly want to freshen up hanging garments, such as dresses or blazers, a steamer is more convenient. Many people who travel with shirts prefer the iron.

Does a mini steam iron work as well as a normal one?

The result on a shirt or a pair of trousers is good, but the soleplate is smaller and the tank gives less steam, so you need more passes and more time. It is perfect for a few garments; for ironing the whole week's laundry, a household iron is more comfortable.

Can the travel iron go in hand luggage?

The rules depend on each airline and airport, so check them before you fly. In any case, travel with the tank empty and the iron completely cold, with the handle folded and the cable gathered. That way you avoid water leaking into your bag and make any inspection easier.

Does it work in countries outside Spain?

Elsewhere in Europe it works on the same voltage, although in some countries you will need a plug adapter. For countries with a different voltage, such as the United States, check in the specifications whether the iron accepts it; a plug adapter does not change the voltage.

What water goes in a small steam iron?

Tap water if it is soft or, if it is very hard, a mix with distilled water, as the manufacturer's instructions indicate. Do not use perfumes, fabric softener, vinegar or water from a tumble dryer, as they can stain clothes or block the holes in the soleplate.

Do I need an ironing board?

No. A stable table or desk with a thick towel folded under the garment is enough: it protects the furniture from the heat and acts as a soft base. Check beforehand that the surface can take the heat, and never iron on the bed, which sinks and can scorch.
